• Hornbook I Schoolhouse Sampler

The Eighteenth Century revisits a multitude of needlework adaptations, techniques, stitch methods, and necessaries. The hornbook was used by school children for several centuries, starting in the Mid-15th century, in Europe and America. It consisted of a wooden paddle with lessons tacked on and covered by a piece of transparent horn. Maureen’s husband Dennis joined THC a few years ago from the historic and picturesque Door County, Wisconsin, home of the largest cherry producing region in the States. He has handcrafted this natural cherry hornbook from trees he and his father cultivated, and now brings it to you for your completion of this charming school girl sampler.      First in a Series
